Discover the unique Pannonian natural landscape of Lake Neusiedl, about an hour's drive south-east of Vienna in Burgenland, by means of bike excursions starting from the seaside town of Rust. The cross-border Lake Neusiedl cycle path around Europe's second largest steppe lake is a total of 125 kilometers and has been awarded 5 stars by the ADFC, which is the top grade. The bike route is flat and mostly close to the lake along the reed belt, through beautiful vineyards, idyllic locations and through the Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park and through Hungary in the southern part.

Getting there

Individual arrival in Rust on Lake Neusiedl and check-in at the 4 * Seehotel Rust. The picturesque, medieval town of Rust is known throughout Austria for its good wines and for its storks on the chimneys.

The Seehotel Rust is located between the historic old town of Rust and Lake Neusiedl - a great location to enjoy your cycling holiday

Seehotel Rust

Oggau, approx. 34 km

For your first excursion, we recommend the wine town of Oggau. The best red wines in Austria come from here. The Neusiedler See cycle path leads through vineyards with a beautiful view over the lake to the historic Oggau market, the destination of numerous wine connoisseurs from all over Europe. In so-called Heurigen or Buschenschanken (ostrich taverns) you can taste these wines and also culinary delicacies directly from the winemaker at a reasonable price. We return to the hotel in Rust via the Oggau Heath.

Sopron (Ödenburg), approx. 37 km

Today we suggest a bike trip across the border to the small Hungarian town of Sopron (in German Ödenburg). First you cycle along the Seeradweg through vineyards to Mörbisch. The place is known across the country for its lake festivals, which take place on a stage in the lake in summer. Shortly afterwards you will reach Hungary and cycle on a side road to nearby Sopron. Stroll through the historic center of the capital of Western Hungary and try a glass of Hungarian wine.

Illmitz / Lange Lacke, approx. 43 km

For today's stage destination, the Lange Lacke National Park, first drive back to Mörbisch and then take the ferry to Illmitz (approx. 50 min.). On the Neusiedler See cycle path you then cycle “into hell” and marvel at the flora and fauna. The route continues over the “Lange Lacke” to Illmitz and by ferry back to the other shore of the lake and back to the hotel.

Neusiedl, about 55 km

To the main town of Neusiedl you cycle first through the Oggau Heath and on through the wine-growing towns of Donnerskirchen and Purbach. For the return journey you can either take the train to Donnerskirchen (hourly; approx. 15 min train ride) and then cycle back to the hotel, or you can choose the active tour and cycle the entire route back (+22 km).

Eisenstadt, approx. 43 km bike

For the excursion to Eisenstadt, the capital of Burgenland, you cycle on the Neusiedler See cycle path past Oggau to Schützen. There you can get on the train with your bike (every hour; 12 min. Train ride) and go to Eisenstadt or you can cycle the entire route there and back by bike (+ 16 km). In Eisenstadt it is worth visiting the magnificent Esterhazy Palace (entrance included) and the spacious park. Return the same way, either by train to Schützen or everything by bike.

Roman quarry St. Margarethen, approx. 20 km

At the end we recommend a short bike tour to the Roman quarry in the wine-growing community of St. Margarethen. The rock walls of the quarry are now one of the most beautiful and imposing open-air arenas in Europe and have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In 2021 a brilliant production of the opera Turandot is on the program. The cycle route continues on the Seeradweg through the community forest and slightly hilly. Due to the short bike excursion, you have time to enjoy all the amenities of your hotel in Rust in the afternoon or to take a final swim in Lake Neusiedl.
