This classic tour on the Danube cycle path from Passau to Vienna in 8 days is ideal for your first cycling holiday because you can shorten the daily trips by train or by boat.

Arrival

Individual arrival in Passau; hand over of rental bikes and travel documents; (unguarded) parking space is included.

Passau - Schlögen, about 40 km

Passing Obernzell and Engelhartszell, you cycle through the deep gorge that has been cut out of the Bavarian Woodland, passing castles and pretty villages towards to one of the most famous part of the Danube, the "Schlögener Schlinge".

Schlögen - Linz, about 59 km

A delightful day of cycling through an area of outstanding natural beauty to Aschach and further on to Linz (European capital of culture 2009).

Linz - Grein/Ardagger, about 63

Short tour to St. Florian - monastery and pilgrimage site where Anton Bruckner is buried beneath the famous Bruckner organ (entrance incl.). Continue the route via Enns, the oldest town of Austria, which boasts not only Roman but also Baroque and Renaissance heritage, cross the Danube from Enns by ferry to Mauthausen and cycle to Perg.

Grein/Ardagger - Maria Taferl (A)/Marbach (B), about 59 km

Through woodland and orchards towards Grein. The approach to the town takes you through the "eye of the needle", a narrow stretch of valley once feared by sailors, and passes the imposing Greinburg castle. Passing the Habsburg-castle Persenbeug you cycle to Marbach.

Maria Taferl (A)/Marbach (B) - Krems/Traismauer, about 47/54 km

Cycle tour to Melk (famous abbey) and further on to Spitz. Through the vineyards of the "Wachau" you pass the romantic town of Dürnstein, with its castle (Richard the Lionharted was imprisoned there) till you reach the Roman town Krems.

KremsTraismauer - Vienna, about 57 km, ca. 27 min train

Via Mautern, through the green valley (vegetable growing-area for whole Austria) to Tulln and further on to a suburb of Vienna - Greifenstein. There you give back the rental bikes and go by suburban-railway to Vienna.
